Our Model
Our model leverages blended finance to drive measurable impact
“Saving the lives of mothers and newborns is not only a health issue, it is a moral, economic, and social imperative.”
– Dr. Natalia Kanem, Executive Director, United Nations Population Fund
A Scalable Financing Platform for Maternal and Newborn Health
MNF is built on a transformative premise: that maternal and newborn health interventions, especially maternal nutrition, can be financed at scale through strategic capital mobilisation.
To that end, MNF combines philanthropic capital, development financing, and government co-investment within a structured platform designed to accelerate outcomes, strengthen systems, and drive long-term impact.
Our model blends global financing with local delivery to ensure every pregnancy is nourished and every newborn has a stronger start to life.
Blended Capital Structure
At the heart of MNF is a blended finance model that combines:
Philanthropic Grants
Concessional Loans
Government Contributions
Private Sector Investments
Reinvestment Mechanisms
This structure unlocks private capital, accelerates fund deployment, and sustains maternal and newborn health impact in fragile settings.
Strategic Focus Areas
MNF channels resources into targeted interventions with the strongest evidence for reducing maternal and newborn mortality:
1. Maternal Nutrition
- Large-scale delivery of Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS)
- Integration of antenatal nutrition into routine primary healthcare
- Community demand generation and maternal health education
2. Local Manufacturing & Pharmaceutical Systems
- Support for regional MMS production facilities to ensure sustainable supply
- Strengthening of regulatory and quality assurance frameworks
- Cost reductions of up to 50% through regional sourcing and proximity manufacturing
3. Health System Integration
- Distribution through national antenatal clinics, mobile maternal outreach, and community health workers
- Digitally enabled supply chains and real-time monitoring systems
- Policy alignment with national maternal and newborn health strategies
MNF’s delivery system is designed for scale, efficiency, and national ownership. MMS production is managed through a renowned global manufacturer and a network of regional partner factories, located close to or within target countries. This approach ensures high-quality production, cost-efficiency, and reliable supply.
The supplements are then donated in-kind to a trusted UN agency partner, which coordinates national distribution in collaboration with Ministries of Health and relevant government agencies across target countries. This model combines global expertise with local implementation to reach the women who need it most.
Distribution is embedded into the public health system and delivered through:
- Public antenatal clinics and hospitals
- Community health worker networks
- Mobile outreach units serving remote and conflict-affected areas
Monitoring & Accountability
Every component of the MNF delivery model is designed to be measurable, verifiable, and adaptable. The monitoring and learning framework includes:
- Baseline, midline, and endline evaluations
- Digital dashboards tracking supplement use and maternal outcomes
- Independent third-party verification
- Adaptive feedback loops to refine delivery and improve targeting
